Introduction
The 2-euro coin issued by Lithuania in 2025 pays tribute to a historical region of the country: Mažoji Lietuva, or “Little Lithuania.” This commemorative issue highlights a territory culturally important to Lithuanian national identity. Furthermore, it is part of a series dedicated to Lithuania’s ethnographic regions. Therefore, this coin aims to highlight the historical and symbolic richness of this region bordering the Baltic Sea.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a design centered around a detailed coat of arms. At its heart is a leaping bull, the traditional emblem of Little Lithuania. This symbol evokes the region’s strength, pride, and cultural vitality. On either side of the coat of arms are two stylized sails, symbolizing the maritime importance of this coastal area. An eight-pointed star sits at the top, within a rectangle representing the sun, a source of energy and unity.
The inscription “LIETUVA” appears in an arc across the top, meaning “Lithuania” in English. Below, the year “2025” is engraved to the left of the coat of arms. In addition, two banners adorn the lower part. The first is inscribed with the text “SPINDULYS ESMI BEGALINĖS ŠVIESOS”, which translates into English as “I am a ray of infinite light.” This poetic quote reflects a sense of luminous and eternal identity. The second banner displays the words “MAŽOJI LIETUVA”, meaning “Little Lithuania,” explicitly identifying the honored region.
Moreover, the design highlights a harmonious and symmetrical composition. Each element reinforces the solemn character of the coin. Indeed, the whole evokes the nobility of the regional history and the continuity of Lithuanian culture. Finally, twelve stars border the outer crown, as is the standard for euro coins.
Conclusion
In short, this €2 coin issued by Lithuania in 2025 honors the memory and heritage of Mažoji Lietuva, the country’s emblematic region. Through its meticulous iconography and powerful symbols, it helps promote Lithuanian cultural identity within the European Union. Thus, it is part of an approach to preserving traditions while celebrating the nation’s historical diversity.
