Introduction
In 2027, Estonia is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin dedicated to Hiiumaa County, located in the western part of the country. This issue launches a new numismatic series focused on Estonia’s various counties. Through this, the Bank of Estonia aims to highlight the geographical, historical, and cultural diversity of its regions.
Hiiumaa is one of Estonia’s most remarkable island territories. Located in the Baltic Sea, this county consists primarily of the island of the same name, along with several surrounding islets. Its landscape is particularly notable for its forests, beaches, and coastal scenery. Furthermore, fishing, navigation, and maritime activities have long played an essential role in its history.
Among the island’s most iconic monuments is the Kõpu Lighthouse, which dates back to the 16th century. This historic structure is one of the oldest lighthouses still in operation today. It has guided mariners for centuries and stands as a testament to the importance of Baltic maritime routes.
Par conséquent, cette pièce célèbre autant le patrimoine architectural de Hiiumaa que son identité insulaire. Elle souligne également les liens étroits entre les habitants, la mer et les traditions locales.
Coin Description
The obverse of the coin depicts the Kõpu Lighthouse, a historic symbol of Hiiumaa County. This monumental structure occupies the left side of the central disc. Its tall, quadrangular tower rests on an imposing stone base, a characteristic feature of its architecture. At the top is the lantern, surmounted by a small metal structure. The design thus highlights the distinctive silhouette of this lighthouse, which has dominated the island’s landscape for several centuries.
In the background, numerous rays of light emanate from the lantern, spreading toward the upper part of the composition. Their arrangement recalls the characteristic stripes found on the skirts of traditional folk costumes from Hiiumaa. The designer has intentionally linked these regional patterns to the light of the lighthouse. Furthermore, the waves depicted behind the monument evoke the Baltic Sea and the island’s maritime traditions. The overall effect highlights the connection between cultural heritage and the natural environment.
On the right is the coat of arms of Hiiumaa County, featuring four fleurs-de-lis arranged around a knotted vertical rope. Directly above it appears the inscription “HIIUMAA” identifying the territory being honored. On the left side are the inscriptions “EESTI” and “2027” denoting Estonia and the year of issue, respectively. Finally, the outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European Union, in accordance with the specifications for 2-euro coins.
In the bottom right section, the geographic coordinates “58°53′3″ N 22°38′40″ E” complement the depiction. They serve as a unique element of the design, reinforcing its geographic character. Furthermore, the various symbols convey the significance of Hiiumaa within Estonian heritage. The lighthouse, in particular, evokes maritime safety, while the rays of light call to mind folk traditions. Thus, this composition brings together maritime history, regional identity, and cultural richness.
Estonian designer Kaupo Kangro created this design, titled “Dageida.” His entry won the competition organized by the Bank of Estonia in August 2026. With this, the issue launches a series dedicated to Estonia’s regions and their unique characteristics.
Conclusion
In summary, the 2-euro commemorative coin issued by Estonia in 2027 pays tribute to Hiiumaa County, an island territory in the Baltic Sea. By featuring the Kõpu Lighthouse, this issue celebrates an iconic landmark in Estonian maritime history.
Furthermore, the rays of light—inspired by traditional costumes—highlight the importance of local cultural heritage. The coat of arms and the geographical coordinates also reinforce the regional identity of the composition. In this way, the piece harmoniously combines traditions, history, and the natural environment.
Furthermore, this issue marks the launch of a new numismatic series dedicated to the counties of Estonia. It thus reflects the country’s desire to showcase the richness of its various regions. Finally, this coin serves as a tribute to the maritime heritage of Hiiumaa and the passing on of its traditions to future generations.
