Introduction

In 2027, the Republic of San Marino is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin marking the 300th anniversary of the death of Isaac Newton. Born in England in 1643 and having passed away in London on March 31, 1727, this renowned physicist, mathematician, and astronomer ranks among the most influential scientists in history. His discoveries revolutionized the understanding of natural phenomena and laid the foundations for classical physics.

Best known for his three laws of motion and his theory of universal gravitation, Newton also made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics and optics. In 1687, he published his seminal work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which profoundly and lastingly transformed modern science. This numismatic issue pays tribute to a scholar whose work continues to influence our understanding of the universe.

Coin Description

This 2-euro commemorative coin from San Marino, issued in 2027, pays tribute to Isaac Newton, a major figure in the scientific revolution of the 17th and 18th centuries. It marks the tercentenary of his passing and highlights the significance of his discoveries in the history of science.

The theme is reminiscent, in particular, of Newton’s work on universal gravitation, which explains both the falling of objects and the motion of the planets. His research on light and the decomposition of colors also contributed to the development of modern optics. Furthermore, his mathematical breakthroughs provide fundamental tools for numerous scientific disciplines.

Beyond his scientific discoveries, Isaac Newton also holds an important place in the history of British coinage. Appointed to the Royal Mint in 1696, he became its master in 1699. He played a key role in combating counterfeiting and improving the monetary system. This connection to numismatics further enhances the symbolic significance of this commemoration.

As the official design for the national side has not yet been unveiled, the artistic composition and specific inscriptions remain to be determined. The outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union, in accordance with the regulatory specifications for 2-euro coins.

Conclusion

With this 2-euro commemorative coin from 2027, San Marino pays tribute to Isaac Newton and his exceptional scientific legacy. His discoveries in the fields of physics, mathematics, and astronomy represent major breakthroughs that have profoundly shaped the history of human knowledge.

This issue also highlights Newton’s role in the history of British currency, adding a distinct numismatic dimension to this commemoration. It thus enriches the collection of European 2-euro coins dedicated to major scientific and intellectual figures from history.
