Introduction

In 2026, the Principality of Monaco is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin dedicated to the Duchy of Valentinois. Located in southeastern France, this historical territory has maintained close ties with the Grimaldi dynasty since the 17th century. This issue thus commemorates a significant chapter in the political and diplomatic relations between Monaco and the Kingdom of France.

In 1642, King Louis XIII granted the duchy-peerage of Valentinois to Prince Honoré II of Monaco, following the Treaty of Péronne signed in 1641. This agreement marked a shift in the Principality’s alignment toward France, ending a long period under Spanish protection. The title of Duke of Valentinois thus became a symbol of the prestige and dynastic history of the Grimaldi family, and has since been regularly held by members of the princely house.

Coin Description

The obverse of this 2026 Monegasque commemorative 2-euro coin depicts the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross (Sainte-Croix) in Montélimar, located in the principal town of the former Duchy of Valentinois. The building dominates the composition, featuring an imposing bell tower and various architectural structures. This depiction highlights the religious and historical heritage of Montélimar, which is closely linked to the history of the duchy.

In the upper right section appear the arms of the Grimaldi family, recognizable by their lozenge pattern, alongside an orb surmounted by a cross. The latter element is derived from the coat of arms of Montélimar and also recalls the town’s former mint mark. The combination of these symbols thus highlights the historical ties between Monaco and the Valentinois region.

On the left is the year “2026”, accompanied by the marks of the Monnaie de Paris. In the upper right part, the inscription “MONACO” identifies the issuing country. Finally, the lower part includes the words “DUCHÉ DE VALENTINOIS”, inscribed in an arc. The outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union, in accordance with the characteristics of the 2 euro commemorative coins.

The composition, created by the engraving workshops of the Monnaie de Paris, emphasizes a detailed architectural representation. It combines historical heritage, heraldic symbols, and dynastic traditions, while also highlighting the significance of the Duchy of Valentinois in the history of the Principality.

Conclusion

With this 2026 commemorative 2-euro coin, Monaco pays tribute to the Duchy of Valentinois and its significance in the history of the Princely Family. The depiction of the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross (Sainte-Croix) in Montélimar, alongside heraldic symbols, illustrates the long-standing ties between the Principality and France.
