Introduction

In 2026, Greece is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Academy of Athens. Established on March 18, 1926, this prestigious institution serves as the country’s highest scientific and intellectual authority. For a century, it has contributed to the development of the sciences, literature, and the fine arts, while fostering research and the dissemination of knowledge.

Inspired by the Academy founded by the philosopher Plato in antiquity, this modern institution upholds a long intellectual tradition. It also plays an essential role in preserving Greece’s cultural heritage. Thus, this numismatic issue pays tribute to one hundred years of academic excellence, while highlighting the importance of learning and the transmission of knowledge.

Coin Description

The obverse of this 2026 Greek commemorative 2-euro coin depicts the main building of the Academy of Athens. This iconic neoclassical structure is distinguished by an architectural style directly inspired by the temples of ancient Greece. At its center, an imposing portico supported by six Ionic columns dominates the composition. A richly decorated triangular pediment surmounts the structure, while a monumental staircase leads to the main entrance.

On either side of the building stand statues of the philosophers Plato and Socrates. These two major figures of ancient thought symbolize the pursuit of truth, the use of reason, and the transmission of knowledge. Above the façade, a flagpole bearing the Greek flag serves as a reminder of the institution’s national character.

The upper section bears the inscription “100 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΙΔΡΥΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΑΚΑΔΗΜΙΑΣ ΑΘΗΝΩΝ” meaning “100 years since the founding of the Academy of Athens.” Nearby are the year “2026” and the symbol of the Greek Mint. The lower section features the inscription “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ,” meaning “Hellenic Republic.” Finally, the outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European Union.

The Greek engraver Georgios Stamatopoulos designed this composition for the Bank of Greece. His design highlights the country’s architectural and intellectual heritage, bringing together philosophical legacy, scientific excellence, and national identity.

Conclusion

With this 2026 commemorative 2-euro coin, Greece celebrates a century of commitment to the sciences, literature, and the arts. The depiction of the Academy of Athens perfectly illustrates the link between the intellectual legacy of antiquity and the scientific ambitions of the contemporary world.

With a mintage of 750,000, this coin also serves as a tribute to the scholars and intellectuals who contributed to the influence of Greek culture. Its iconic architectural imagery and profound historical significance make it a particularly compelling coin for collectors of European commemorative coins.
