Introduction

In 2026, Croatia is issuing a commemorative 2-euro coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Croatian radio and television. This issue pays tribute to a century of audiovisual broadcasting and the evolution of the nation’s media. In doing so, it highlights the significance of broadcasting within the country’s cultural, social, and technological history.

The history of Croatian radio began on May 15, 1926, with the first broadcast from Radio Zagreb. That evening, at 8:30 p.m., the station launched its programming on a wavelength of 350 meters. Listeners were introduced to a new medium of communication, capable of broadcasting news, music, and entertainment. Subsequently, radio underwent significant development and became an essential medium in everyday life.

In 1956, television also made its appearance in Zagreb, marking a new milestone in the history of Croatian broadcasting. Gradually, television programs complemented radio broadcasts, reaching an ever-wider audience. Furthermore, technological advancements made it possible to improve both the quality and the diversity of the content.

Today, Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT) serves as the country’s primary public radio and television broadcasting organization. As the successor to Radio Zagreb, this institution plays a major role in disseminating information and promoting Croatian culture. Consequently, this piece celebrates a century of media innovation and the transmission of knowledge.

Coin Description

The obverse of the coin features an abstract composition representing radio waves arranged across five horizontal lines. These patterns occupy almost the entire central disc and evoke the propagation of electromagnetic signals. The vertical lines, varying in both length and thickness, create a particularly original graphic effect. Furthermore, their repetition calls to mind the oscillations of the waves used in radio transmissions.

The design makes direct reference to the first broadcast by Radio Zagreb, which aired on May 15, 1926—a date that marks the beginning of the history of Croatian radio broadcasting. The five rows of waves symbolize the initial signals that enabled the transmission of voice and music over a distance. Furthermore, this depiction highlights the gradual evolution of communication technologies, from radio to contemporary television.

Within the lines, several inscriptions are integrated directly into the design. The year “2026” appears in the upper section, while the center features the inscription “100 GODINA HRVATSKE RADIOTELEVIZIJE” This phrase translates to “100 Years of Croatian Radio and Television.” Additionally, the letters “HR” visible in the lower section, indicate the issuing country. Finally, the outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European Union.

The composition also carries a second, symbolic meaning. The alternation between the waves and the surfaces of the central disc evokes the Croatian checkerboard pattern, known as the “šahovnica.” This motif is a key element of the national coat of arms. Thus, the design links the history of media to a major symbol of Croatian identity.

Sculptor Karlo Gross designed this piece with a focus on a modern, graphic approach. His stylized initials, “KG” are also incorporated into the composition. Unlike issues that depict monuments or notable figures, this piece employs an abstract visual language. Consequently, it highlights technological progress while underscoring the cultural significance of national broadcasting.

Conclusion

In summary, the 2-euro commemorative coin issued by Croatia in 2026 celebrates the centenary of Croatian radio and television. It notably commemorates the first broadcast by Radio Zagreb, aired on May 15, 1926, which ushered in a new era for national communications.

Through an original representation of radio waves, this issue pays tribute to the advancements in broadcasting. Furthermore, the inclusion of the national checkerboard pattern highlights the connection between media and Croatian cultural identity. The design also evokes the evolution of audiovisual technologies throughout the 20th century.

Thus, this piece serves as a tribute to one hundred years of broadcasting, creative work, and audiovisual innovation in Croatia. It also highlights the role of Hrvatska radiotelevizija in transmitting cultural heritage and knowledge. Finally, this commemoration underscores the importance of the media in the evolution of contemporary Croatian society.
