Introduction

In 2026, Andorra is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the new Sanctuary of Meritxell. Located in the parish of Canillo, this monument is one of the most iconic religious sites in the principality. It notably welcomes pilgrims who come to honor Our Lady of Meritxell—the patron saint of Andorra—whose feast day is celebrated every September 8th.

The history of the sanctuary took a tragic turn on the night of September 8–9, 1972. A violent fire ravaged the old structure and destroyed the original Romanesque statue of the Virgin. Following this disaster, the Andorran authorities entrusted the reconstruction to the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill.

Thus, on September 8, 1976, the Principality officially inaugurated the new sanctuary. Its architecture combines contemporary forms with traditional Pyrenean religious customs. Since then, this monument has held an essential place in the nation’s heritage. Consequently, this numismatic issue celebrates half a century of history, spirituality, and architectural renewal.

Coin Description

The obverse of the coin depicts the new Sanctuary of Meritxell, the architecture of which reflects the work of Ricardo Bofill. At the center, several buildings form an architectural ensemble characterized by distinct geometric shapes. Notable features include stone walls, a bell tower, and the various structures that make up the religious complex. Furthermore, several large arches play a prominent role in the composition; their rounded lines contrast with the angular volumes of the buildings. In this way, the design highlights the sanctuary’s architectural originality and its decidedly contemporary character.

In the upper section is the inscription “SANTUARI NOU DE MERITXELL” which means “New Sanctuary of Meritxell” in Catalan. Directly below, the number “50” marks the fiftieth anniversary of the monument’s inauguration. The word “ANIVERSARI” accompanies this number, clarifying the nature of the commemoration. Additionally, the year “2026” appears on the right. The name of the issuing country, “ANDORRA” occupies the lower part of the central disc. Finally, the outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union, in accordance with the specifications for 2-euro coins.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this work highlights the rebirth of a monument deeply rooted in Andorran identity. In reconstructing the sanctuary, Ricardo Bofill sought to combine modernity with architectural traditions, drawing inspiration from Romanesque architecture and the surrounding mountain landscapes. The large arches, for instance, stand out as one of the most recognizable elements of his design.

Furthermore, the design harmoniously integrates the number “50” into the curves of the arches. This arrangement creates a visual link between the anniversary and the monument. Moreover, the architectural details recall the significance of the reconstruction following the fire of 1972. In this way, the composition celebrates both the unique character of the sanctuary and its historical and cultural importance. It also underscores the Principality’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing modernity.

Conclusion

In summary, Andorra’s 2026 commemorative 2-euro coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the new Sanctuary of Meritxell. Inaugurated on September 8, 1976, this monument symbolizes the rebirth of a major religious site following the fire of 1972.

It also highlights the significance of Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of the principality. Furthermore, this commemoration underscores the deep connection the Andorran people have to their religious and cultural heritage.

Indeed, the sanctuary bears witness to their desire to preserve traditions while embracing modernity. Furthermore, it embodies the country’s historical and spiritual continuity.
