Introduction

In 2026, Finland will issue a 2-euro commemorative coin in honor of architects Raili and Reima Pietilä, two major figures in contemporary Finnish architecture. This release notably marks the centenary of the birth of Raili Pietilä, who was born on August 15, 1926. In doing so, it highlights a couple whose work has left a profound mark on the country’s architectural landscape.

Raili Pietilä (1926–2021) and Reima Pietilä (1923–1993) together developed an original approach to architecture. Their designs favored organic forms and harmonious relationships between buildings and their natural surroundings. In contrast to the rigid geometric lines of traditional modernism, they sought out structures inspired by landscapes, rock formations, and vegetation.

Their notable achievements include the Dipoli university center in Espoo, the Kaleva Church in Tampere, and the Mäntyniemi presidential residence. Furthermore, their work helped elevate the international profile of Finnish architecture. Consequently, this piece pays tribute to their creativity and innovative vision, which is rooted in a dialogue between nature and the built environment.

Coin Description

The obverse of the coin depicts part of the Dipoli building, one of Raili and Reima Pietilä’s most iconic designs. Located in Espoo, this university complex exemplifies their original conception of architecture. In the foreground, a facade with asymmetrical shapes occupies the lower left part of the central disc. Its large glass openings and irregular lines evoke the sculptural character of the building.

On the right appears a stylized tree, with branches and foliage characterized by rounded forms. This element highlights the importance of nature in the couple’s work; the architects sought to integrate their structures into the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, the lines of the building seem to extend the forms of the vegetation. In this way, the composition underscores the close connection between architecture and the natural environment.

In the upper section, the inscriptions “RAILI“, “REIMA”, and “PIETILÄ” appear, arranged over three lines. These identify the two architects honored by this issue. Also on the left are the country code “FI” and the year “2026“. Nearby is the caduceus, the mint mark of the Royal Dutch Mint. Furthermore, the letter “R” on the right serves as the designer’s signature. Finally, the outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union.

Finnish designer Pekka Rytkönen conceived this piece by focusing on the architectural forms characteristic of the work of the Pietilä couple. His design notably combines the geometric lines of a building with the natural silhouette of a tree, thereby illustrating the couple’s desire to bring modern architecture and the Finnish landscape closer together. Furthermore, the absence of portraits serves to directly highlight their artistic legacy. The composition thus stands as a tribute to their creativity and their influence on 20th-century Finnish architecture.

Conclusion

In summary, the 2-euro commemorative coin issued by Finland in 2026 pays tribute to architects Raili and Reima Pietilä. It notably marks the centenary of Raili Pietilä, while also highlighting the couple’s joint body of work.

Through the depiction of the Dipoli building and a stylized tree, this program highlights their original approach to architecture. Indeed, their projects reflect a constant desire to integrate human-made structures into their natural environment. Furthermore, their work has helped to renew traditional architectural forms and bolster the international reputation of Finnish design.

Thus, this piece serves as a tribute to two major figures in Finland’s architectural heritage. It also underscores the importance of innovation, creativity, and respect for nature in the evolution of contemporary architecture.
