Introduction

In 2026, Estonia is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin dedicated to Sipsik, an iconic character from Estonian children’s literature. Sipsik was born from the imagination of Estonian writer Eno Raud, while illustrator Edgar Valter gave the character its distinctive appearance. The character first appeared in the early 1960s and went on to become the hero of stories that proved highly successful among young readers.

Over the decades, Sipsik has become a symbol of childhood in Estonia. The stories convey values such as friendship, kindness, and solidarity. Furthermore, they encourage children to develop their curiosity and imagination. Consequently, this piece celebrates a character deeply rooted in Estonian cultural memory.

Coin Description

The obverse of the coin depicts Sipsik, the famous rag doll created by Eno Raud and illustrated by Edgar Valter. The character occupies a large portion of the central disc and is shown in a reclining position. Her head, slightly tilted, rests on one of her hands, while her legs are tucked toward the right. This relaxed posture lends the composition a particularly joyful and childlike quality.

Sipsik’s face features several characteristic elements: large, round eyes, a small nose, and a wide smile that give her a mischievous expression. Furthermore, her tousled hair—depicted through numerous engraved lines—reinforces her visual identity. Her supple body and clothing also evoke her nature as a doll crafted from scraps of fabric.

The drawing favors rounded shapes and expressive details, staying true to the graphic world of Edgar Valter. Furthermore, the absence of a background allows the focus to remain entirely on the character. This simplicity highlights an accessible and endearing quality, while also underscoring the importance of imagination in stories created for children.

In the upper right part of the central disc are the inscriptions “EESTI” and “2026” representing Estonia and the year of issue, respectively. The name “SIPSIK“—identifying the character being honored—appears in the lower part. Finally, the outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union, in accordance with the specifications for 2-euro coins.

Estonian graphic designer Ivar Sakk created this design based on the original illustrations by Edgar Valter. His work preserves the character’s distinctive features while adapting them to the technical requirements of coin engraving. This issue thus brings together literary heritage, illustration, and Estonian cultural traditions. It also highlights the role of children’s books in the transmission of a collective imagination.
