Introduction

The commemorative euro coin issued by Slovakia in 2027 celebrates the 250th anniversary of Ratio Educationis. This fundamental text marked the history of education in the former Kingdom of Hungary, to which Slovakia then belonged. Consequently, the National Bank of Slovakia has chosen to honor this educational event of major historical significance. Indeed, Ratio Educationis, promulgated in 1777 during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, aimed to modernize and unify the education system. The coin thus commemorates not only a school reform but also a step forward in the spread of Enlightenment in Central Europe.

Coin description

The obverse of this Slovak coin features a composition rich in educational and historical symbols. In the center, a stylized portrait of Maria Theresa stands out, facing right. Thus, the imperial figure emphasizes her decisive role in educational reform. Around the imperial bust, a series of fine lines evoke rays of light. Thus, the image symbolizes the transmission of knowledge and the clarity of new ideas.

Furthermore, at the top of the obverse is the inscription “RATIO EDUCATIONIS,” faithful to the original Latin. In English, this means “Education System.” Just below, we find the years “1777 – 2027,” which recall the 250 years that have passed since the text was published. To the left of the portrait, the issuing country’s name, “SLOVENSKO,” is engraved in capital letters.

Additionally, an open book occupies the lower right portion of the coin. It illustrates the importance of formal education in society. The book bears a diagonally placed quill, reinforcing the theme of the written transmission of knowledge. To the right of the book, the Kremnica mint mark, “MK,” appears in small print, accompanied by the engraver’s initials. The entire design follows a symmetrical and elegant layout typical of Slovak commemorative coins.

Conclusion

In summary, this 2027 coin issued by Slovakia commemorates a major turning point in European educational history. The choice to depict Maria Theresa highlights the imperial scope of the reform. Furthermore, the iconographic elements used reinforce the idea of intellectual elevation through school. Thus, the coin is part of a desire to recall the foundations of modern education in Slovakia. Consequently, it embodies the memory of an essential reform, still present in contemporary educational principles.
