Introduction
In 2026, Slovakia issued a €2 commemorative coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Czechoslovak national football team’s historic victory at the 1976 European Championship. This landmark event took place in Belgrade, then in Yugoslavia, where Czechoslovakia won the continental title against West Germany. The coin thus pays tribute to a glorious page in the shared history of Slovakia and the former Czechoslovakia. It also highlights the national pride aroused by this legendary sporting triumph.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a dynamic composition centered around an iconic football scene. It depicts a player taking a penalty kick, evoking the famous Panenka penalty, the decisive goal in the final. Indeed, Czechoslovakian player Antonín Panenka scored the winning goal with a now-legendary shot. Furthermore, the player’s posture on the coin perfectly illustrates this tense and elegant moment.
Behind the player, a stylized net recalls the goal’s surroundings, reinforcing the effect of movement. Furthermore, to the right of the composition is the year of victory, 1976, accompanied by the year of issue, 2026, both in bold. In addition, the name of the issuing country, SLOVENSKO, is inscribed at the top, clearly identifying Slovakia as the issuer. Just below, one can read the words 50. VÝROČIE VÍŤAZSTVA ČESKOSLOVENSKA NA ME VO FUTBALE, which in English means “50th anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s victory at the European Football Championship.”
The coinage marks are also found on both sides of the design: on the left, the Kremnica Mint mark (MK); on the right, the engraver’s initials. Moreover, the twelve stars of the European Union surround the whole, in accordance with the standards for 2-euro coins. Therefore, the coin combines historical memory and European symbolic elements in a balanced way.
Conclusion
Ultimately, this €2 coin issued by Slovakia in 2026 pays vibrant tribute to the 1976 triumph. It highlights the importance of sport as a vehicle for national identity and collective memory. It also recalls the historical ties between Slovakia and Czechoslovakia, while celebrating a sporting achievement that marked an entire generation. In short, this commemorative issue illustrates the prominent place of football in Slovak cultural and historical heritage.
