2009 – Slovakia – 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

Introduction

This 2 euro coin, issued by Slovakia in 2009, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. This peaceful revolution in November 1989 led to the end of communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Therefore, this play marks a crucial turning point towards freedom and democracy.

Below the bell, we see the name of the issuing country “SLOVENSKO”. To the right of the central motif, the initials “MK” and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica) confirm the manufacturing workshop. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the central design, forming a circle. This starry circle symbolizes the unity and harmony of the EU member countries.
