Introduction

In 2025, the Principality of Monaco issued a €2 commemorative coin dedicated to Les Baux-de-Provence, a former stronghold of the Grimaldi family. This theme highlights another historical territory linked to the Monegasque dynasty, highlighting the extent of its feudal influence over the centuries. As such, this issue is part of a series dedicated to the former estates of the princely house. Furthermore, it demonstrates the close connection between the medieval history of Provence and that of Monaco. Thus, this coin pays tribute to a rich noble, political, and architectural heritage.

Coin description

The obverse of the coin depicts a building characteristic of the medieval architecture of Les Baux-de-Provence. The illustration features a stone facade with mullioned windows, a circular tower, and an arched portal. This building evokes the stately homes of the village, once the center of significant feudal power. In the background, a diamond-shaped border recalls the heraldic motif of the Grimaldi coat of arms, reinforcing the visual identity of the principality.

In the upper part, the inscription “MONACO” clearly indicates the coin’s origin. To the right, the date of issue “2025” is clearly engraved, accompanied by a heraldic lion. This lion, an emblem of strength and nobility, directly refers to the Grimaldi dynastic symbols. In addition, delicate stars adorn the outer border, following the tradition of euro coins.

At the bottom, we find the inscription “LES BAUX,” the name of the fiefdom in the spotlight. This explicit mention underlines the theme of the issue. Indeed, Les Baux-de-Provence has been a territory associated with the Grimaldi house since the 17th century, when King Louis XIII granted it to the principality. Consequently, this evocation underlines the royal recognition and territorial anchoring of the Grimaldi within the Kingdom of France.

Conclusion

The 2-euro coin issued by Monaco in 2025 pays vibrant homage to Les Baux-de-Provence, a former princely stronghold of major symbolic and historical value. Indeed, this issue reflects a desire to highlight the territorial roots of the House of Grimaldi. Furthermore, the artistic composition of the obverse reflects great historical and aesthetic rigor. As a result, this commemorative coin helps strengthen the prestige of the principality by recalling its feudal past. Finally, it aptly illustrates the memory of a noble territory, once linked to the destiny of the Princes of Monaco.
