Introduction
In 2025, Croatia issued a commemorative €2 coin to celebrate a seminal moment in its history: the 1,100th anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia and the coronation of King Tomislav. This event, which dates back to 925, marks the official birth of the Croatian kingdom. Therefore, this issue highlights the antiquity and continuity of Croatian sovereignty over its territory. It also honors the iconic figure of King Tomislav, considered the first crowned ruler in Croatian history.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features an imposing depiction of King Tomislav on horseback, inspired by a famous statue erected in Zagreb. The king is depicted in armor, his head covered with a crown, in a proud and determined posture. His gaze is turned toward the horizon, a symbol of leadership and political vision. Furthermore, the horse is rearing, reinforcing the martial character of the composition.
In the background, a vertical banner evokes the medieval royal standard, reinforcing the historical identity of the scene. Around the central golden part of the coin, an inscription in Croatian surrounds the main motif. It reads:
“KRALJ TOMISLAV 925 REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA 2025”,
which translates into English as:
“King Tomislav 925 Republic of Croatia 2025”.
This wording symbolically combines the country’s monarchical past and contemporary republican identity.
Additionally, the coin’s outer rim is adorned with the twelve European stars, in accordance with the standard format of the €2 coin. These frame the whole, affirming Croatia’s membership in the European Union while paying homage to its national past. The sculpture is rendered in high relief, highlighting the details of the royal face, the horse, and the drapery of the armor.
Conclusion
In short, this 2025 Croatian €2 coin solemnly commemorates the coronation of King Tomislav and the birth of the Kingdom of Croatia in the year 925. It highlights a decisive moment in Croatian history, which laid the foundations of its political and cultural identity. Thus, through a majestic and faithful representation of its first king, Croatia affirms the antiquity of its nation and celebrates a millennium of sovereign heritage.
