Introduction

In 2026, the Republic of San Marino issued a €2 commemorative coin to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi. This coin pays tribute to one of the most significant figures of medieval Christianity. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Order of Friars Minor, died in 1226. Therefore, this commemoration has profound spiritual and cultural significance for Europe. Furthermore, it confirms San Marino’s commitment to Christian values and the Franciscan heritage.

Coin description

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi, depicted facing forward, in an attitude of prayer or contemplation. He wears the traditional Franciscan habit, with a hood and a rope tied at the waist. Furthermore, his gaze is directed towards the sky, reinforcing the expression of spiritual devotion. In the background, symbolic elements such as the stylized sun and birds can be seen, evoking his famous preaching to the creatures.

At the top of the coin is the inscription “SAN MARINO,” which designates the issuing state. To the left of the portrait is the inscription “SAN FRANCESCO D’ASSISI,” which means “Saint Francis of Assisi” in English. To the right, the dates “1226 – 2026” recall the eight centuries that have passed since his death. In addition, a small engraver’s monogram appears at the base of the image, highlighting the artistry. Twelve stars form a discreet circle around the central motif, in accordance with European standards. Thus, the design combines religious elements and civic references in a harmonious balance.

Conclusion

In summary, the commemorative coin issued by San Marino in 2026 for the 800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi constitutes a solemn and deeply symbolic tribute. It underlines the importance of this religious figure in the European Christian tradition. Consequently, the obverse of the coin reflects both Franciscan piety and the continuity of spiritual values. Finally, San Marino affirms, through this issue, its historical anchoring in Christian culture and its commitment to the memory of great figures of peace.
